"The Ballad of Mack the Knife" was written in German in 1928 ("Die Moritat von Mackie Messer"), premiering in Berlin in what is known in English as The Threepenna Opera.  Based on the historical thief Jack Sheppard, and the fictional highway robber Macheath, one could call it a modern form of the medieval murder ballad ("moritat").  The song recounts the crimes of Mack the Knife.
